Our history

The Höpler family has been making wine since the 1860’s and it was Jost Höpler in the 1980’s who founded the business as we know it today.

By 2004, the original winery in Winden am See was proving too small so we moved to our current site in the neighbouring village of Breitenbrunn. Winden now houses höplers weinräume.

Today Chrisof Höpler is the owner and wine maker. He took over from his father Jost in 2007 and continues the family tradition – sensitively farming our 50 hectares of vines.  His stewardship ensures a balance combining up to date viticultural practices with proven methods of the past.

Our winery

The Höpler winery is a 2,500m² modern facility equipped with state-of-the-art equipment and powered by solar energy.

Our winery is light and airy providing a great working environment for our team.  These are prerequisites for the consistent production of our high-quality wines.

Höpler is certified as a sustainable producer, our winery is IFS certified and like all Austrian producers we are regulated by Austrian wine law, widely acknowledged to be one the most rigorous in the world.

Wine making

Christof believes a good wine will find its own balance. It takes time and it requires sensitivity. He uses traditional wine making methods and draws on modern improvements when it makes sense.

The majority of our wines are fermented and stored in stainless steel tanks and we use French oak barrels to mature the balance, mainly our red wines. Our wines are vegan. We do not use any animal-based products.

We keep things simple. We allow our wines to mature in harmony, develop strong characters, and find their own identity. Their origins in our Höpler vineyards always remain tangible and lend a clear signature to our wines. We allow them the freedom to find their own balance and, in return, they thank us with their highest quality.

Our vineyard practices

Höpler is certified sustainable by Sustainable Austria and has been following sustainable practices for decades. This is a process of continual improvement.

Vineyards have lifespans in excess of 40 years. Caring about the health of our ecosystem and ensuring we treat it well is at the heart of what we do.

Our vines are watered only by natural rainfall. We do not use pesticides. Cover crops and natural compost, are used between rows to add nutrients, attract beneficial insects and prevent erosion. We leave old vineyards fallow for up to 10 years to allow the soil to rest before re-planting.

We adjust our practices according to each vineyard and the prevailing climate. Every year is slightly different. Leaf management practices vary to suit the aspect of the vines and the varietal. More airflow around the fruit can help reduce the risk of fungal disease but too much sun exposure can stress the grapes and limit their development.

Understanding the balance maintained by nature helps minimise our intervention.

Mag. Christof Höpler

Owner and Winemaker

Christof enjoys the beauty and colour in everything. Always up for an adventure and with a dizzying head for speed he feels and senses life deeply and thankfully these are vital attributes for a winemaker! He gains enormous energy from travel and his interaction with customers and loves to share ideas and try new things. A keen sportsman Christof finds balance from the demands of running the business in the outdoors. Mountain biking in the summer and ski touring in the winter. Hugely generous and often disarmingly charming. Quality, values, loyalty and professionalism are paramount.

Jost Höpler Portrait

Jost Höpler

Founder

Jost spent his early career abroad working in Burgundy, Bordeaux, Champagne, Alto Adige, and Australia. He was one of the first Austrian Wine makers to export Austrian wine to the US and Asia, spreading the word of the Grüner Veltliner grape. Blessed with extraordinary energy and drive, he led Kloster Keller Siegendorf for 15 years and set up Höpler in the 1980s. After ‘retirement’ he launched WiraWåxt, from the Nussberg in Vienna. He skis, spends time with his grandchildren and visits customers across the country. If there was ever proof that the quality of the wine is a key ingredient to a long and healthy life, this must be it, people still talk of his 1981 Noble Reserve which won 99 points.

Karin Hartmann

IFS and Office

Karin is the queen of standards, ensuring we are well trained and thinking ahead. She has a great sense of adventure, adores travel, and is deeply connected to nature. In her spare time you will find her foraging for herbs or drumming with her family and friends. Be warned this colourful smiley lady has a black belt in precision and detail, many an auditor has been sent home early simply stunned, and grateful with the high quality of her work.

Engelbert Halbwax

Cellarmaster

Bertl is one of the kindest man you will ever meet. He has an excellent and consistent palate and is always open minded and curious to try new things. This is reflected in his passion for his antique tractor and his newfound hobby as an e-biker. He loves to visit different wine regions with his large group of friends and enjoys sharing his knowledge. Bertl sees the humour in everything.

Mihaly Molnar

Vineyard and Winery

An early riser Mihaly can turn his hand to anything. He is a creative solution finder who has a calm, wise soul and is quite unflappable under pressure. Family and friends are extremely important to him and there is nothing more delightful than listening to Mihaly talk about his wife and children. He subconsciously stands more upright and his entire face lights up in a proud broad smile.

Karol Hegedüs

Vineyard and Winery

Karol is the joker of the team and is the longest serving member who is not a Höpler. He has a youthful heart, filled with Hungarian passion. He loves wine, sport and the outdoors but when working in the cellar he is usually singing, sometimes shouting, and always teasing with exuberance.
